Search Engines in China have only in recent times taken off and proven very popular with local people. With the recent up rising of Baidu, China's leading Search Engine, a number of other smaller search engine companies have also followed suite with the competition for market share very high.

Baidu has the largest market share and have the advantage where they are very good at indexing Chinese sites with Chinese characters. The indexing of English sites in China in Baidu is not as good as Google but due to factors such as people tend to use one search engine and stick with it, understanding how to optimize for Baidu in both languages would maximise the chances of being highly ranked in Chinese search engines.
